Fraser River Fishing Report, February 2009
Steelhead fishing is in full swing. Our top steelhead guide Kevin Lee had his best day with 3 steelies landed. We fish mostly the Vedder/Chilliwack River system as well as the Chehalis River system. We further access some remote rivers for steelhead fishing via helicopter or high powered jet boat.Trout fishing has been decent, mostly on the backwaters of the Fraser River as well as the Harrison Rivers. We further fish sections where smaller tributaries enter the main rivers. Fly fishing with egg patterns are productive by letting the “bait” drift over or close to the fish.
Wilderness Trout Fishing is by far our most popular way of combining fly- and spin fishing in a pristine and untouched environment. The water is crystal clear and you can see every rock on the river bottom. We fly fish single- or double handed or spin fish with our proven light spoons and spinners. Float fishing works as well with flies or ultra light tackle drifting beneath our wooden floats which weigh just over 1/10 of an ounce! We have imported some fishing methods/tackle rarely known in North America, which brings ultra light fishing to a new level. Some of our lines feel like a hair and can be a challenge to tie a knot, despite the fact that the line has a breaking strength of over 7 lbs.
Sturgeon Fishing is definitely a DO NOT for us during the month of February. With the arrival of a new cold weather front and cold water temperatures, the sturgeon are gathering on the bottom of the river in deep holes. We feel it is totally inappropriate to reel down a piece of bait and either foul hook them or drag them out of “hibernation”. This is where sturgeon conservation should start. We can`t wait to take you out sturgeon fishing from March to mid December. Once the water temperature goes up and feeding activity start to increase we will show you what a real sturgeon looks like in a battle man vs. fish.
Salmon Fishing will start in April with the arrival of some smaller runs of Chinook Salmon (King Salmon) on some of our wilderness rivers. June to November is the best time for quality salmon fishing. We are excited about the fishing forecast from the Department of Fishery and Oceans, which predicts an excellent number of return salmon. 2009 will be a big year in any way and hopefully one of our guests will break our lodge record.
