Fraser River Fishing Report for October 2008

Special Fishing Report – Sturgeon World Championship 2008

After 2 years of preparations we`ve hosted the first annual “Sturgeon World Championship Tournament” on Oct. 23 & 24, 2008. It was pleasing to see how great preparations and great partners result in a first class international event.

Teams from the USA, England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Denmark, Austria and Canada competed in an exciting tournament. 39 anglers landed a total of 247 sturgeon, of which many had been tagged and carefully released.

The winning sturgeon measured 7 ft. 11 inches and was landed by Paul Smart from Scotland. 2nd place went to Allison Campbell from the United States and Third place went to Peter Weingartner from Austria.

The lodge was hosted the gala dinner in a first class setting. Don Froese and Gail Star from Seabird Island Indian Band prepared salmon on the open fire pit and our Chef Kerry Krahn added delicious steaks, prawns and other goodies to the buffet. It was an evening to remember and to repeat.

The Sturgeon World Championship had been sold out since earlier this year. Despite receiving a few last minute cancellations, the event was a full success and we are planning another tournament of this format for 2009.

Sturgeon fishing has been very HOT! We are consistently catching 10 footers plus in the last few weeks. This fish here in the picture was 11 foot weighing in at over 700lbs. As I write this update one of our guides believes he has a 12 footer on right now and I will keep everyone posted with pictures and measurements.

Chum are showing up in good numbers and we have been doing good on the fly as well as bar fishing for the Harrison run of Springs.

Coho will be picking up more next week.

October is going to be a great month and we expect everyone will have excellent success whether you are in pursuit of salmon or giant sturgeon.
