Steelhead Fishing in British Columbia
Steelhead Fishing in British Columbia means fishing the most elusive fish in BC. January to April is prime time for winter and August to September for summer runs.
British Columbia Steelhead fishing in the Fraser Valley offers good angling opportunities for winter and summer run Steelhead. The Vedder and Chehalis River's both contain good stocks of winter Steelhead while only the Chehalis River has summer runs. The Vedder River is a main steelhead river in the Fraser Valley where 6,000 to 10,000 fish can be expected to return each year. Many Steelhead are caught each year in the 15-20 lbs. range, with an estimated average weight being 10-12 lbs.
We fish for steelhead single- and double handed. Our recommended tackle is a 7 to 9 weight fly rod with floating line and sink tip. If we fish slow flowing waters, an interchangeable tip system comes handy, since we may switch to a slow sink tip, water conditions pending. If you are into spin fishing, than we suggest float fishing with a variety of baits, spinners, lures and spoons.
Steelhead trout have been known to perform spectacular jumps and runs in a quest to be released unharmed. This and their sheer beauty is why anglers from around the world converge here each winter. We guide for Winter Steelhead in mid January and continue through until April. Peak season is February to April. We offer steelhead trips to various locations through- out the Fraser Valley. From the scenic Chilliwack River, where we filmed 3 TV shows "Fishing with Shelley and Courtney" featuring steel-heading at it`s very best. We were blessed with a 14 lbs. doe.
There is no doubt, that the steelhead trout is not only the most challenging sport fish in BC, but also the most elusive fish British Columbia has to offer - when it comes to fly fishing. It takes a lot of patience, experience and luck. Some say it takes 10,000 casts to catch a steelhead on the fly. I have seen trophies landed on the first day. I can only encourage you not to give up, because there is something really special about steelhead fishing on the fly.
Wilderness Steelhead Fishing on the Fly
From January to April we are fishing our wilderness rivers for wild British Columbia steelhead on the fly. Peak is February to March. We offer day trips into those untouched river systems where steelhead average 10 lbs.
The run is small in numbers, but the fish are mighty once hooked on the fly. At the same time we catch aggressive bull trout and cutthrout trout. Combine all of those species and you have one of the most attractive fishery for the fly fishing purist. We access those waters with extremely light custom built river jet boats in order to reach our (often secret) fishing grounds. We are a grou of experienced fly fishing guides that are specialized on those wild rivers. We will spoil you on each wilderness trip with a barbequed shore lunch where we serve wild salmon, bison or vegetarian.
